foliation

How leaves grow

Foliation is the arrangement of leaves on a plant, or the process of producing leaves.

In geology, foliation describes the layered structure in metamorphic rocks where minerals align in parallel planes, creating a banded appearance.

The word also applies to decorative leaf-shaped ornamentation in architecture, or the process of applying thin metal foil to surfaces: The gilded frame required careful foliation.

In mathematics, foliation refers to decomposing a space into parallel subspaces.
