keyway
Shaft's locking groove
A keyway is a slot or groove cut into a shaft or hub to receive a key—a small metal piece that locks rotating parts together, preventing slippage between a gear and its shaft, for instance.
The keyway and key transfer torque while allowing the parts to be assembled and disassembled.
The machinist cut a keyway into the drive shaft.
