press fit

Tight tolerance assembly

A press fit is a mechanical joint where one part is forced into another slightly smaller opening, held in place by friction rather than fasteners or adhesives.

The interference between the two parts creates a tight, permanent connection: The bearing was installed with a press fit into the housing.

Also called an interference fit.

As a verb, to press-fit is to join parts this way.
