junket

Taxpayer-funded outing

A junket is a trip taken at public expense, especially one by an official that's more pleasure than business: The senator's "fact-finding mission" to Hawaii looked like a junket.

The word carries a whiff of disapproval—taxpayers footing the bill for someone else's good time.

Junket also refers to a milk-based dessert curdled with rennet, though this older sense has faded.

As a verb, to junket is to take such a trip or to feast.
