sweetmeat

Old-fashioned candy term

Sweetmeat is an old-fashioned term for a piece of candy or other sweet confection—sugared fruits, candied nuts, or preserved delicacies.

The word dates from when meat could mean any food, not just animal flesh: The table was laden with sweetmeats and pastries.

Despite the name, sweetmeats contain no meat in the modern sense.
