Boston cream pie is a cake, not a pie—two layers of sponge cake with pastry cream filling, topped with chocolate glaze.
The name comes from its original preparation in pie tins.
A signature dessert of Boston's Parker House Hotel since the mid-19th century, it became the official Massachusetts state dessert.
