jimsonweed
Toxic nightshade plant
Jimsonweed is a poisonous plant with trumpet-shaped white or purple flowers and spiny seed pods.
All parts contain tropane alkaloids that cause hallucinations, delirium, and potentially fatal toxicity.
Despite its dangers, it has been used recreationally and in folk medicine.
The name comes from Jamestown, Virginia, where British soldiers reportedly ate it in 1676 and went mad.
Also called thorn apple or devil's snare.
