basil
Fragrant Italian leaf
Basil is an aromatic herb with bright green leaves, used widely in cooking—especially Italian and Southeast Asian cuisines.
It's the essential ingredient in pesto and a classic companion to tomatoes: fresh basil and mozzarella.
The plant bruises easily and loses flavor when dried, so cooks prefer it fresh.
Sweet basil is most common, but Thai basil and holy basil have distinct flavors. (Capitalized Basil is a given name.)
