weed
Unwanted lawn growth
Weed is any plant growing where it isn't wanted, typically one that spreads aggressively and competes with cultivated plants.
Gardeners spend considerable time pulling weeds.
The word extends to aquatic plants that choke waterways and, informally, to tobacco or marijuana: You got any weed?
As a verb, to weed means to remove unwanted plants, or figuratively to eliminate undesirable elements: They weeded out the weakest candidates.
A person may be called a weed if they're tall and gangly.
