water hemlock

Toxic wetland plant

Water hemlock is a highly poisonous plant of the carrot family, native to wet areas of North America and Europe.

All parts contain cicutoxin, a convulsant that can kill within hours of ingestion.

Despite its name, it is unrelated to poison hemlock—the plant that killed Socrates—though both are deadly.

Foragers sometimes mistake water hemlock roots for wild parsnips.
