jibbing

Horse stopping short

Jibbing is the present participle of jib, a verb with two distinct meanings.

A horse or other animal jibs when it stops and refuses to go forward, balking at an obstacle or command.

By extension, people jib when they show reluctance or unwillingness to proceed with something: She jibbed at signing the contract without reading it first.

In sailing, jibbing (also spelled gybing or jibing) refers to shifting a fore-and-aft sail from one side of a vessel to the other when running before the wind.
