jibbed

Horse stopped short

Jibbed is the past tense of jib, a verb meaning to refuse to proceed or to balk stubbornly.

The term originally described horses that suddenly stop and refuse to go forward, but it extends to people who show reluctance or resistance: The committee jibbed at the proposed budget cuts.

In sailing, jibbed can also mean shifted a sail from one side to the other, though this sense more commonly appears as jibed or gybed.
