ionising

Creating charged particles

Ionising is the British spelling of ionizing.

To ionise is to convert atoms or molecules into ions by adding or removing electrons, typically through radiation or electrical discharge.

Ionising radiation—X-rays, gamma rays, and certain particle emissions—carries enough energy to strip electrons from atoms, which can damage living tissue.

Ionising radiation requires careful shielding.
