en passant

Special chess capture

En passant is a special pawn capture in chess.

When an opponent's pawn advances two squares from its starting position and lands beside your pawn, you may capture it as if it had moved only one square—but only on your immediately following move.

The French phrase means "in passing." Outside chess, en passant means incidentally or by the way: He mentioned en passant that he'd be leaving the company.
