institutionalisation

Making something standard

Institutionalisation is the process of establishing something as a norm or standard practice within a society or organization: the institutionalisation of democratic procedures.

It also means placing someone in an institution such as a psychiatric hospital or care facility, often long-term.

Extended confinement can produce its own effects—people become so adapted to institutional life that they struggle to function outside it: After twenty years in prison, institutionalisation had left him unable to cope with ordinary decisions.

British spelling; Americans write institutionalization.
