orphanage
Home for foundlings
An orphanage is an institution that houses and cares for children whose parents have died or are otherwise unable to care for them.
The term evokes a particular era—orphanages were common through the mid-20th century but have largely been replaced by foster care systems in Western countries: She grew up in an orphanage during the Depression.
The word still applies to such institutions elsewhere in the world.
