deinstitutionalisation
Closing care facilities
Deinstitutionalisation is the process of moving people out of large institutions—psychiatric hospitals, residential facilities for the disabled, orphanages—and into community-based care or independent living.
The term emerged in the mid-twentieth century as reformers questioned whether warehousing vulnerable populations served their interests.
Deinstitutionalisation closed many state hospitals but left some former patients without adequate support.
Critics note that without sufficient community resources, deinstitutionalisation can shift problems rather than solve them.
Also spelled deinstitutionalization.
