iguanodonts
Thumb-spiked reptiles
Iguanodonts are a group of herbivorous dinosaurs that lived from the late Jurassic through the Cretaceous period, characterized by their large size, bipedal or quadrupedal stance, and distinctive thumb spikes.
The group takes its name from Iguanodon, one of the first dinosaurs ever scientifically described.
These plant-eaters had specialized teeth for grinding vegetation and are considered important in understanding dinosaur evolution, representing a transition between earlier ornithopods and the duck-billed hadrosaurs.
