iguanodon

Cretaceous plant-eater

An iguanodon is a large herbivorous dinosaur from the Early Cretaceous period, notable for its distinctive thumb spikes and ability to walk on two or four legs.

The name, meaning "iguana tooth," comes from the resemblance of its teeth to those of modern iguanas.

Iguanodon was among the first dinosaurs ever identified and remains one of the best-known from fossil evidence: The museum's iguanodon skeleton dominated the main hall. (Capitalized Iguanodon is the formal genus name.)
