meniscus

Water's curved surface

A meniscus is a curved upper surface of liquid in a container, caused by surface tension where liquid meets the walls.

Water in a glass tube curves upward at the edges, forming a concave meniscus; mercury curves downward, forming a convex one.

In anatomy, a meniscus is a crescent-shaped cartilage in a joint, especially the knee: She tore her meniscus playing basketball.
