pi bond

Orbital sideways sharing

A pi bond is a type of chemical bond formed when electron orbitals overlap sideways, above and below the plane of the atoms rather than directly between them.

Pi bonds appear alongside sigma bonds in double and triple bonds: a double bond consists of one sigma bond and one pi bond.

They're weaker than sigma bonds and allow less rotation, which affects molecular shape and reactivity.
