hybridisation
Combining different varieties
Hybridisation is the British spelling of hybridization—the process of creating a hybrid by crossing different species, varieties, or types.
In biology, it refers to breeding across genetic lines: plant hybridisation has produced disease-resistant crops.
In chemistry, hybridisation describes the mixing of atomic orbitals to form new hybrid orbitals.
The term extends to any blending of distinct elements: a hybridisation of musical genres.
