hostnames

Server name labels

Hostnames are human-readable labels assigned to devices connected to a computer network, serving as alternatives to numeric IP addresses.

Rather than remembering 192.168.1.1, you might use "printer" or "mail-server" as a hostname.

In internet contexts, hostnames form part of domain names: in "www.example.com," the hostname is "www." System administrators assign hostnames to identify machines on local networks, while DNS servers translate them into IP addresses for routing.
