DHCP

Automatic IP assignment

DHCP stands for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, the system that automatically assigns IP addresses to devices on a network.

When your computer or phone connects to WiFi, DHCP handles the behind-the-scenes work of giving it a unique address so it can communicate.

Without DHCP, network administrators would have to manually configure every device—a task that became impractical as networks grew.
