advise
Give helpful suggestions
When you advise someone you give them a recommendation about what to do or not do.
In other words, you give them advice.
The typical way to use advise is preceding an infinitive phrase: I advise you to shop around before you settle on a doctor.
When advise is followed by a clause beginning with a question word, its meaning is not so much about advice as it is simple information: We were advised that the road to the park was still closed.
The same is true when an of phrase follows: The suspect was advised of his rights.
