hinterlands

Beyond the coast

Hinterlands are remote areas far from cities and cultural centers—the backcountry, the sticks, the places civilization thins out.

Originally the term meant the inland region served by a port city, but now it usually suggests rural isolation or underdevelopment: She grew up in the hinterlands of Montana.

The singular hinterland works the same way but sounds slightly more formal.
