herpes simplex
Recurring blister virus
Herpes simplex is a viral infection that causes recurring outbreaks of fluid-filled blisters, typically around the mouth (cold sores) or genitals.
The virus remains dormant in nerve cells between outbreaks and can reactivate throughout life.
HSV-1 usually affects the mouth; HSV-2 usually affects the genitals, though either type can infect either location.
