prodrome

Early symptom phase

A prodrome is an early symptom or set of symptoms indicating the onset of a disease or condition before the main manifestation appears.

Migraines often have prodromes—visual disturbances, mood changes, or fatigue that precede the headache itself.

In psychiatry, the prodromal phase of schizophrenia refers to subtle changes before psychotic symptoms emerge: She recognized the prodrome and adjusted her medication.
