bacterial meningitis
Inflamed spinal membranes
Bacterial meningitis is an infection of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, caused by bacteria rather than viruses.
It progresses rapidly and can be fatal within hours without treatment: The infant was rushed to the ER with suspected bacterial meningitis.
Symptoms include severe headache, stiff neck, fever, and sensitivity to light.
Unlike viral meningitis, which usually resolves on its own, bacterial meningitis requires immediate antibiotics.
