virion
Complete virus unit
A virion is a single, complete virus particle—the form that exists outside a host cell.
It consists of genetic material (DNA or RNA) enclosed in a protein coat, sometimes surrounded by a lipid envelope.
Virions are inert until they infect a cell, at which point they hijack cellular machinery to replicate.
The researchers counted virions per milliliter of blood.
