HSV-1

Oral herpes virus

HSV-1 is herpes simplex virus type 1, the strain that typically causes oral herpes—cold sores or fever blisters around the mouth.

Most people acquire it in childhood through nonsexual contact.

Though traditionally distinguished from HSV-2 (genital herpes), HSV-1 can also cause genital infections through oral sex.

The virus remains dormant in nerve cells and reactivates periodically.
