acute infection
Short, severe sickness
An acute infection is one that develops rapidly and runs a relatively short course, typically days to weeks.
The term contrasts with chronic infections, which persist for months or years.
Acute infections often produce intense symptoms—high fever, severe pain, rapid onset—before resolving through recovery or, in serious cases, death: The acute infection cleared up within a week of starting antibiotics.
