hardtack

Sailor's dry ration

Hardtack is a simple, dry cracker made from flour, water, and sometimes salt, baked until completely moisture-free.

Its extreme dryness makes it nearly indestructible and resistant to spoilage, which made it a staple ration for soldiers and sailors before modern preservation methods: Civil War soldiers called hardtack "sheet iron" and "worm castles".

The crackers were so hard they often had to be soaked in water or coffee before eating.
