sea biscuit

Sailor's lasting bread

Sea biscuit is a hard, dry cracker or bread made for long voyages, designed to resist spoilage and mold.

Also called hardtack or ship's biscuit, it was a staple aboard sailing ships for centuries: The sailors soaked their sea biscuits in coffee to make them edible.

The name survives mainly in historical contexts.
