hard coal
Dense black fuel
Hard coal is anthracite—coal that has been subjected to the most heat and pressure, giving it the highest carbon content and energy density.
It burns cleaner and longer than softer coals like bitite or lignite: The old furnace was designed for hard coal.
The term distinguishes it from soft coal (bituminous), which is more common but produces more smoke.
