carbonization
Turning to char
Carbonization is the process of converting organic material into carbon, typically through intense heat in the absence of oxygen.
Wood becomes charcoal through carbonization; ancient plant matter carbonized over millions of years to form coal.
The term also describes the charring or burning of something to a carbon residue: The steak was carbonized beyond recognition.
