brown coal

Low-grade fuel rock

Brown coal is a low-grade coal with high moisture content and relatively low heat output, intermediate between peat and harder coals.

Also called lignite.

It retains visible plant structures and burns with considerable smoke.

Brown coal is abundant but environmentally problematic, releasing more carbon dioxide per unit of energy than other fossil fuels.
