greenhouse gas

Climate change culprit

A greenhouse gas is a gas in Earth's atmosphere that traps heat from the sun, contributing to global warming.

Carbon dioxide, methane, and water vapor are the primary examples.

The name comes from the glass panels of a greenhouse, which similarly trap warmth inside: Burning fossil fuels releases greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
