renal failure
Kidneys stop working
Renal failure is the inability of the kidneys to adequately filter waste products from the blood.
Acute renal failure comes on suddenly, often from injury, infection, or medication; chronic renal failure develops gradually, typically from diabetes or high blood pressure.
Advanced cases require dialysis or transplantation: She's been on dialysis since her renal failure worsened.
