septicemia

Bacteria invade bloodstream

Septicemia is a serious, potentially fatal condition in which bacteria multiply in the bloodstream.

Often called blood poisoning, it can develop from infections elsewhere in the body—a wound, pneumonia, a urinary tract infection—that spread to the blood.

Without prompt treatment, septicemia can progress to sepsis and organ failure.

The infected cut led to septicemia within days.
