sleeping sickness
African fly disease
Sleeping sickness is a parasitic disease transmitted by the tsetse fly in sub-Saharan Africa, causing fever, confusion, and eventually a disrupted sleep cycle that gives the illness its name.
Without treatment, it progresses to coma and death.
The term also applies to encephalitis lethargica, a different disease that caused an epidemic in the early twentieth century.
