death zone
Above survivable height
The death zone is the altitude above roughly 8,000 meters (26,000 feet) where oxygen levels are too low to sustain human life for extended periods.
Climbers in the death zone—applicable only to the world's highest peaks—face rapid physical deterioration regardless of supplemental oxygen: They spent eighteen hours in the death zone before reaching the summit.
The term emphasizes that the body is actively dying, not merely struggling.
