Threatening, unfriendly place
A hostile environment is a setting where conditions make someone feel unwelcome, threatened, or unable to function normally.
In workplace law, it specifically describes harassment severe or pervasive enough to create an abusive atmosphere: The constant jokes about her accent created a hostile environment.
The term also applies to physical settings dangerous to human life: Astronauts train to survive in the hostile environment of space.
