guywire

Tensioned support cable

A guywire is a tensioned cable anchoring a tall structure to the ground—radio towers, utility poles, circus tents.

The wires run diagonally from high on the structure to stakes or anchors at ground level, preventing sway or collapse.

Also spelled as two words: guy wire.

The guy comes from an old word for guide.
