monopole

One-ended magnetic particle

A monopole is a hypothetical magnetic particle with only one pole—north or south, but not both.

In standard physics, magnets always have two poles; cut a bar magnet in half and you get two smaller magnets, each with north and south.

Magnetic monopoles remain theoretical, though their existence would elegantly explain certain aspects of electromagnetic theory.

In radio engineering, a monopole is also an antenna consisting of a single rod or wire, typically mounted vertically over a ground plane.
