guying

Ribbing someone gently

Guying is mocking or making fun of someone, typically in a good-natured way: The crew spent the evening guying him about his terrible golf swing.

The word comes from Guy Fawkes, whose effigy was traditionally ridiculed on Bonfire Night.

Guying also refers to steadying something with guy wires or ropes: They finished guying the tent before the storm hit.
