rain gutter

Eaves drainage trough

A rain gutter is a trough attached along the edge of a roof to collect and channel rainwater away from a building's foundation.

Usually made of aluminum, vinyl, or copper, gutters direct water to downspouts that carry it safely to the ground.

The term distinguishes this from a street gutter, though in contexts where the meaning is obvious, people simply say gutter.

The rain gutters need cleaning before the wet season.
