term-limits

Mandated departure dates

Term limits are restrictions on how many times a person can hold a particular office or how long they can serve in it.

The concept most often appears in debates about political power: Many states impose term limits on governors.

Advocates argue they prevent entrenchment; critics say they waste experienced legislators.

In the U.S., presidents face term limits but most members of Congress do not.
