fruit brandy

Pear or plum liquor

Fruit brandy is a spirit distilled from fermented fruit other than grapes.

While grape brandy (including cognac and armagnac) dominates the category, fruit brandies made from apples, pears, cherries, plums, and other fruits have strong regional traditions: calvados from Normandy apples, slivovitz from Eastern European plums, kirsch from cherries.

The fruit's character carries through fermentation and distillation, distinguishing these spirits from fruit-flavored brandies, which are grape brandy with added fruit essence.
