eau de vie

Clear fruit spirit

Eau de vie is a clear, colorless brandy distilled from fermented fruit.

The French term means "water of life," cognate with whiskey and vodka, which derive from the same phrase in Gaelic and Slavic languages.

Eau de vie typically comes from fruits other than grapes—pears, plums, cherries, raspberries—and is usually unaged: a pear eau de vie, Alsatian eau de vie.
